By the time I graduated high school, I had moved 27 times
and had gone to 14 different schools-- if that won't make
someone a great actor, I don't know what will.
While most people are shocked by these numbers, I am
grateful. Every change was a new opportunity for me to
learn about people, my surroundings and myself-- not to
mention how to "act" in new situations.
I started "theatrical" acting in high school. On my first day at
the second high school out of three that I would actually
attend, the drama club was holding auditions for Rebel
Without a Cause. A cute boy in my drama class said he was
going to audition and that I should too!
At the audition, I of course had no idea what I was doing, but the cute boy encouraged me and gave me the "scoop". I ended up getting a part in that play; I was one of 40 who got cast out of over 300 who auditioned. I
played an extra who I named Suzy. I didn't have any lines, but I didn't care-- I was part of something with
people who were dorks just like me and it made my transition into the new school a terrific experience. It also
introduced me to friends that I still have to this day which is something for which I will be forever grateful. My
crush on that boy lasted a few months, but my love for acting was just beginning to blossom.
The next year I was cast as Mrs. Bennett in Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice which was when I realized that
and I was in love with the stage and there was no turning back! Between my Sophomore and Junior years, I
was privileged to tour with children's show from St. Louis along the south and east coasts all the way up to
NYC, where we performed Off-Broadway. My senior year of high school I was awarded "Outstanding
Performer" at the Utah Shakespeare Festival, which was quite an honor and convinced me that the theater is
where I was meant to be.
From there I went on to do community theatre and then professional theatre as well as television and film. I
lived in Los Angeles for a couple of years where I worked full-time as a background actor (that's the fancy word
for extra) and got to work on shows including "The Drew Carey Show", "Caroline in the City", "Chicago Hope"
and many more! I also played Isobel in Pirates of Penzance, where I "got discovered" by a personal manager
who signed me and got me representation with a reputable agency. This is something people spend a lifetime
trying to attain, so it was very exciting and quite flattering.
Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately depending on how you look at it, I left LA literally a week later to visit my
Mom in North Carolina and never went back. I was young and decided that I wanted to get married and have a
family and blah, blah, blah...hind sight is 20/20!! However, I don't believe in regret- I am where I am now for a
reason.
I have hit a few speed bumps along the way which have slowed me down a bit, but I keep moving forward and
don't plan on ever stopping. Acting is part of who I am and while I may not be a celebrity right now or maybe
ever--- being on stage feeds my soul, and every soul needs to be nourished. |
